the g stands for genius

Derek Simmons, professionally known as Derek G., is a multi-talented Bermudian bassist, audio engineer, music producer, and performer. Born on January 4, 1990, into a deeply musical household—his father being a legendary Bermudian jazz guitarist and accomplished sound engineer—Derek was primed to become a cornerstone of the island’s contemporary music scene. Adopting the moniker where "the G. stands for Genius," he has built a reputation as both a vital collaborative force and a distinct solo creator.

Derek G. is widely recognized as the driving bassist for DIA (Devil's Isles Audio), one of Bermuda’s most innovative backing bands. Formed in 2010, DIA shook up the local landscape by blending hip-hop, reggae, and soul into a brand-new, uniquely Bermudian genre known as gombass.

Beyond the bass guitar, Derek G. operates heavily behind the mixing console through his imprint, DGS Productions. As a producer and audio engineer, he is a frequent collaborator for rising and established island artists alike, anchoring regional anthems like "Bermuda Day" and engineering tracks like "Island Fever" and "One Drop".

As a solo artist, his production style weaves smooth electronic arrangements with hip-hop and rap sensibilities. His early career saw the release of experimental electronic compositions like "Kweebland", paving the way for a more mature sound featured in his 2023 singles, including "Ppl", "The New You", and "Sun Song".
